Medi Laos International Hospital wants to preserve the health of its patients, visitors, staff, physicians, volunteers and community by being 100 percent Smoke-Free.
Smoking is not allowed anywhere on Medi Laos River property, including parking lots, entrances and exits. Formerly designated smoking areas are closed at all three HRH sites. Anyone wishing to smoke is required to leave hospital grounds.
Medi Laos River is a proud supporter of Smoke-Free Laos and joins many hospitals, businesses and organizations across Laos in implementing this important initiative.
What this means for our Patients:
For the comfort of Medi Laos River inpatients who smoke and cannot do so while receiving care; or for inpatients who prefer not to leave hospital property to smoke, Medi Laos River offers a comprehensive Inpatient Smoking Cessation Support Program, including Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) during your hospital stay by arrangement with your physician. If you are interested in quitting smoking, please inform your nurse or care provider.

Why did Medi Laos River become 100% Smoke-Free?

Do patients have to leave hospital property to smoke?
Smoking is not permitted by anyone, at any time, on Medi Laos River property. All patients, visitors, staff, physicians and volunteers must leave the premises if they wish to smoke. For inpatients who smoke and cannot leave Hospital property, Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and counseling will be provided during your hospital stay by arrangement with your physician. If a patient declines NRT and wishes to smoke, they will have to leave Hospital property to do so.
I will be visiting a patient at Medi Laos River, where can I smoke?
All patients, visitors, staff, physicians, and volunteers who wish to smoke must leave the property to do so.
As an inpatient, can Medi Laos River help me quit smoking during my stay?
Medi Laos River inpatients who want to quit smoking during their hospital stay can speak to a nurse about HRH’s Inpatient Smoking Cessation Support Program. To enhance the comfort of your stay at Medi Laos River, Nicotine Replacement Therapy will be provided to inpatients (admitted to a Hospital bed) during your hospital stay by arrangement with your physician. Upon discharge, patients can connect with Smokers’ Helpline at 1-877-513-5333 to speak with a counselor or contact their doctor for more information.
As an outpatient, am I still eligible for free Nicotine Replacement Therapy?
Unfortunately, Medi Laos River can only offer Nicotine Replacement Therapy to patients while they are admitted to a Hospital bed.
What will happen if I smoke on Hospital property?
If you are found smoking within nine metres of any Medi Laos River entrance or exit, you may be subject to a fine which will be administered by the City of Toronto. If you’re found smoking outside the nine metres you will be asked to extinguish your tobacco product or leave hospital property if you wish to continue smoking. Failure to do so may result in being charged under the Trespass to Property Act.
